Striking Design, Shimmering Ink, and Fiery Themed Details!

Studio Observations

The Lord of the Rings – Bijou Fountain Pen (Sauron™ Edition) from Ferris Wheel Press, makes a striking first impression with its dark, fiery dark red body and intricate, themed gold detailing. The engraved grip, inspired by the gates and imagery of Mordor, gives the pen an elegant and dramatic, collectible feel that stands out immediately. The craftsmanship is evident throughout, with fine details that add to its visual appeal.

 

In hand, the pen feels comfortable and well-balanced, making it easy to use for longer writing or drawing sessions. As soon as I started writing, the standard 0.55mm nib felt smooth and easy to control, quickly becoming one of my preferences for everyday use. Despite the shimmer, the ink flowed nicely and remained consistent on the page with no skipping. The Tengwar calligraphy nib took a bit more time and practice in getting used to. I like that it offered line variation depending on the angle you hold it. For broader strokes I held it at an angle, and for finer lines I held it more upright. This variation adds an expressive quality that is quite joyful. The nibs were easy to change out which also added to the enjoyment of the fountain pen.

 

The included “ominous wine-red” ink with gold shimmer complements the pen’s fiery aesthetic beautifully. The shimmer is subtle in writing but adds a beautiful metallic depth, in more expressive or artistic applications of which I am more aligned. I also used the standard nib for a small botanical sketch, where it handled fine, delicate lines with ease and felt very controlled on the page.

 

One detail I’ve appreciated with other pens from the brand, like my Joule Fountain Pen, is the inclusion of a leather carrying sleeve, so I did find myself missing something similar here, particularly at the price point. Overall, this is a beautifully designed pen that blends visual impact with a comfortable writing experience, especially for those who enjoy themed or collectible pieces.
