Studio Observations

As an artist and Ferris Wheel Press ambassador, I approach every fountain pen as both a writing instrument and a creative tool. The Superman “Fortress of Solitude” Fountain Pen and Ink Set combines storytelling and function in a way that feels inspired and cohesive, drawing from Superman’s iconic frozen sanctuary which is a remote, crystalline place associated with strength, reflection, and renewal.

The set includes the Marquise Fountain Pen Stylo-Plume and Frozen Fortress 28ml fountain pen ink. The pen is made from aircraft-grade aluminum with gold-plated brass details, and it is truly a beautiful and striking piece in person. It has a solid but comfortable weight in hand, and I appreciated the balance during drawing, painting and writing. The hexagonal barrel and cap are smart design choices that prevents the pen from rolling. The gold-plated nib, engraved with the Superman emblem, is a standout detail that adds to its collectible feel.

As far as writing, the custom 0.7 mm nib was very smooth and consistent, making it ideal for both sketching and detailed line work. I used it for drawing botanical elements in a floral vase composition, as well as writing and taking notes in my journal, where it performed reliably throughout.

The Frozen Fortress ink is a luminous icy blue with silver shimmer. I found it a joy to paint with. I especially loved the way it responded when water was added, creating beautiful blooms, soft transitions, and movement across the paper. At times, the ink seemed to take on a creative flow of its own, leading to unexpected and expressive effects that made the painting process even more enjoyable.

To explore its tonal range, I created a crystal study as well as an abstract bird composition cut from a larger ink swatch. The color feels serene and radiant on paper, while the silver shimmer adds a subtle brilliance that catches the light and enhances both detail and movement. Frozen Fortress is not only a beautiful writing ink but also a remarkable medium for creative expression.

I also wrote the quote, “There is a superhero in all of us,” using the pen, which felt especially fitting while using this collection.
